That is the best way if you want to be buying a one way ticket home. The practice that you suggest is against specific terms of just about every airlines contract of carriage. The preferred method is to buy what you intend on using, and not buy what you don't intent on using. The airline will give you the best price available given what you tell them you are going to fly.

Please google (or look up in any airline's CoC) the terms "point beyond ticketing" or "hidden city ticketing".

Why not be honest and purchase the best fare for the destination you choose instead of trying to cheat the system. Fares are based on supply and demand. You want A, but find out B is less. Well, if you want B, buy it, but if you want A, then buy it. Don't buy B and expect to get A.
