Interesting. I googled "stolen at TSA checkpoint" just to see if other people had a similar experience.
The very first hit was a story of a POLICE OFFICER who had a $5,000 watch stolen at a checkpoint:

(We must be paying our police officers too much money! As for me, the most expensive thing I wear through the checkpoint these days are my shoes. No more watches for me.)
There seems to be more cases of passengers stealing from passengers lately at my airport. Hell, we had a guy who stole a laptop from this dude. The passenger told my supe, he contacted the control center to roll the tapes. Saw who it was, and the cops tracked him down and got it back.
Also, sometimes small items can fall out of a bin/bowl if you put it in wrong.
