We ended up staying at Traders hotel because they had a deal on a suite. The living room area was huge, the bedroom quite small. We were happy with it, though Traders is more of a business hotel (which is why they have deals on the weekend...). The pool is small but also uncrowded. It is attached to a small mall and within walking distance to the Botanical Gardens, which was great.

Swisshotel (the one near Raffles, I think there are two) was also reccomended to me for families.

Other friends have stayed in various service apartments-- even if the website says "minimum week stay", you can often stay for just a few days.

Happy traveling! Be sure to visit the Zoo-- probably the best we have ever been to, my 2 y.o. still talks about the "monkeys! Up in the tree!" (free-ranging orangutans!)
