Just to report back:

Just back from Sheraton HK. The hotel was packed and even the SPG Check-in need to be queued. I asked the front desk lady if my friend could stay with me...no problem, registered her ID and she also get the breakfest with me!

I do agree in Japan this maybe different, encountered before.
