It is very clear in the Terms & Conditions under "Restrictions"

Primary ticket will accrue miles. Companion ticket will not accrue miles. Ticket are not eligible for mileage upgrades, Platinum Systemwide Upgrade Certificates, or Medallion Complimentary upgrades.
