The former, but the short SFO-LAX segment is a total nonfactor in my decision, as is BKK-HKT on TG as my other choice. I would prefer to avoid the LAX connection, but OZ213 doesn't operate on the day I want to fly.

No overnight is required. The actual route is SFO-NRT-BKK-HKT and arrives in Phuket at 11:59PM. The OZ flight arrives at 1AM.
