I have had the check in agent (flying with family and bags at the time) say to me, "here at check in we can take the cert and with a regular old hole punch I punch your boarding pass to let the folks at the gate know that your cert was lifted," as he handed me the boarding pass (with said hole) and my cert. Which was not asked for when I got to the gate...
