Would it have been logical for the agent to assume the OP was using his miles to get the friend's ticket, if he had used his own credit card to pay the fees for his friend's trip, if he said nothing to the contrary? You also stated the reservation stated it was to be paid for with his friend's miles. How would it say that? All I saw from the OP was the reservation was booked online by his friend. That doesn't lead to an assumption of who is paying. It is even possible to book while logged into one account, then log into another account, bring up the reservation and pay there. I usually do that so the person I am booking for can log into their account to see the trip, without needing to log into mine.

If he paid for the fees with the his own credit card, then it would be logical to assume that he wanted to pay with his miles too, unless he said otherwise.
