The LHR taxes are high, but they are dictated by Her Majesty's gummint and not by AA. They are equally high on other airlines, and are much more reasonable when you are connecting through LHR rather than stopping over. Yup, it certainly isn't AA's fault. I needed to book a US-Europe award recently (to PSA/BLQ, so I needed a connection in Europe anyway) and I found that using IB through MAD or BCN turns out to be much cheaper than connecting in LHR.
