Admittedly, not with A380s, but certainly 737 and smaller aircraft are frequently boarded by walking across the apron and up a set of stairs.
Must admit I prefer it that way. With two sets of stairs it's quicker, and there's something nice about getting to walk next to the plane rather than it being hidden away almost out of embarrassment as at airports with airbridges.
