Sounds like something off the starship Enterprise, except the stuff on that actually worked.
The doors worked on the Enterprise because (a) there were two people pulling them open and closing them - just off camera and (b) if the timing wasn't right they just redid the shot.
On second thought, I don't think I want to give the Thousands Standing Around any more ideas...
