Criterion for passenger to walk on apron?

On the back page (80) of the London UK Metro newspaper dated Thursday February 11th was a photograph of the British footballer John Terry standing on the apron at an airport (presumably LHR Terminal 3) next to a SQ A380 aircraft whilst he was waiting to travel to Dubai.

What was he (and the Associated Press photographer) doing in a Secure area? What is the criterion for someone to bypass normal security procedures?
