When I was living in Switzerland I was expected (read: demanded) to bring Lindt chocolates with me every trip to the US. I always had about 10 boxes in my checked bags, declared them on my US customs form w/value and never had a problem. It's been a couple of years since I've done that but don't believe it has changed, at least not according to this US Customs site -

"Bakery items, candy, chocolate, and cured cheese are generally admissible. Canned goods and goods in vacuum packed jars (other than those containing meat or poultry products)are also generally admissible if being imported for personal use."
