This happens to me a couple of times a year. Their false claim to be from Marriott Rewards, as best I can tell, is a ploy to get you to call back. Then you learn that you can get some bonus points by paying for a stay at a MVCI property and listening to a timeshare pitch.

In general I am quite impressed with MVCI in that they are not high-pressure. I've done three "pitches" just to get bennies and have never been treated like a low-life. But I agree with you, cova, that pretending to be Marriott Rewards is shady and doesn't present a professional image.
