There was an interesting article I read (can't remember where) that talked about why Hotel Internet is so slow.

One of the reasons is that when they did some investigation to the type of uses, they discovered a large number of folks doing some sort of streaming.

In the early days, most of the traffic was burst of data (think e-mail or downloads).

Now with streaming you have hundreds of people downloading data constantly.
The internal networks at the hotels were not designed for this type of traffic.
