"Premium" seating?

I'm looking at my boarding pass from earlier today (AA 2252 DFW-ORD). I fly UA almost exclusively, so I'm asking for some help in interpretation.

The below is a crude representation of the printing on part of the BP:

******************************
* BOARDING PASS * PREMIUM
****************************** SEAT/SMOKE
29D NO

The craft was an MD-80.

I don't know if this is a joke or something, but there is nothing "premium" about 29D on that plane. In fact, it's right next to the starboard engine intake (think shrapnel). When I asked the FA to explain, he was baffled and said that he hadn't seen that notation before.

I did pay full fare. Is that what the notation means?
