ask some one to gift him 13000 Amex MR (or less with the 10% bonus - 12000 MR + 1200 bonus) and the ticket can be purchased by him using his miles.
At least they do not die in an orphan account.
For that you have to see if they are available at the 42k price without your logging in.

There is also the value of MQMs, but in this case, that really does not apply

UPGRADE
In my case, there is also the value of the upgrade chances as a PM.
I am sure I will get upgraded on the weekend, but I am not as sure when on an award ticket that I will.

Using pay with miles is a big no no, as those tickets do not get upgraded, while the the award tickets might.
Go figure!
