UA loves to lie and get away with offering any compensation when it can (reduces cost at the expense of their integrity). CALL 1K desk (business hours only) and ask to speak to a Customer Service Agent (CSA). Explain to the CSA that you expect a compensation due to mechanical. Insist on CSA looking up official notes on the flight if he/she denies your request AND ask her to explain why the flight turned back. If she declines further, give the name of the flight attendant you talked to (if you have it; if not just mention FA) and the captain's announcement of the mechanical.

Good luck.

PS. No weather, ever!
