If things go well you are rotated every 20 minutes...unless you are on light duty and have restrictions. Then you are sitting there 8 hours a day 5 days a week. For someone to stay sharp and be aware, that's not a very wise thing.

My best friend who was a TSO got stuck with that and believe me, she hated it. You are supposed to prevent breaches and also call for the checks on the wheelchair passengers,and screen the empty wheelchairs going out to the gates, admit the LEOs, BDOs,Escorted VIPs, Terminal and Screening Managers, and of course the returning TSO's--- and prevent someone from walking down the corridor or jumping the fence to enter the sterile area. And if the exit is poorly designed a la T2 LAX, it's a pain in the azz.

Since every airport is different, every terminal is different, every exit is different, but there still is supposed to be a TSO manning that exit.
