Sounds like those stupid sensor systems at department stores that go off if you leave with one of the tags still on the clothes. Used to have fun with those when I worked retail. Would slip a sensor into another employee's purse or something. Have it go off everytime she left (I hated that psycho witch).
This thing was sort of interesting, although I don't understand why they had it when there was an employee sitting right next to the exit... I guess human error.. However, it stopped working a number of times. One cool thing about it was the ability to program heat scans, so a Denver cop could swipe his badge, and the portal would allow him to walk through without alarming...
