I hadn't heard the May 1 date, but I believe you are totally correct it that the tax applies based on the date of consumption and not the date of purchase.

I friend works for Continuing Ed at a local University and they have to pro-rate the tax, based on the percentage of the course prior to July 1 and the percentage after.

I don't hold much hope in the BC repeal HST campaign getting anywhere so I expect so I expect to be paying the HST this summer.
