PHLGovFlyer is right, there are no upgrades at Hampton. If they give you one that is great, but it isn't a perk that you are entitled to at any time. It isn't a "new rule" as the desk clerk had stated, that has been the rule all along. I love when I get upgraded, but don't complain when I don't because it is a request, not a guarantee.

Once again, I understand that.
I am not asking whether one can
expect an upgrade at a Hampton on a reward stay, but whether there is some
corporate new rule that
always disallows any upgrades on reward stays.
