latest calculations of using miles for a flight vs paying

Hello all. I did do a search on this, but I think terms like miles, value etc are just too common.

Now that we're semi-flooded with miles by Delta, has anyone done a calculation recently on their value for award tickets, as opposed to buying a ticket.

I'm PE and have 560,000 miles and the tally seems to soar each year. My options for a domestic return ticket (economy) for a friend:
1) buy for $480
2) use 42,500 miles
3) pay $150 to transfer 12,000 miles ($120 plus $30 fee) to his account (he has 31,000) plus $75 for short notice booking (he'd be the one buying the ticket and has no status so I presume the fee would apply), which comes to $225 plus 12,000 miles

I'm inclined to use one of the mile options, but I seem to be paralysed by indecision on hitting the button (which needs to be done this evening) so thought I'd try some crowd-thinking FT style!

Tks all!
