I believe that's the general convention for the U.S. colleges and universities. I recall reading at least three similar threads "authored" by non US-based FTers that asked for input for their "dissertations." Two turned out to be for undergrad requirement and another for master's. Oh, there's one more. Once a newbie indicated writing a "thesis" for his college course work.

Knowing as much (or should I say "as little") as what had been revealed in this thread, I highly doubt OP's working on a dissertation for Ph.D in the States. Let me rephrase, if someone is in the dissertation stage and still has no clear direction of the topic or passion in his field, that someone is surely in deep trouble. It's more reasonable to seek help for data collection from FT or other online fora. A dissertation topic? Not so much!
Without his own clarification of his level of degree, FTers in the know won't be able to provide better fitting suggestions. I would think talking to the professor or advisor may work better for the OP.
