Actually, quite a few airlines allow you to convert unused tickets into vouchers and then do a name change. Southwest and AirTran are the most notable, and I don't think I would call them marginal airlines.

But even some of the legacy carriers, including AA and US, allow it under certain circumstances. For example, if a company buys a ticket for an employee who leaves the company, most airlines allow a name change with a letter from an appropriate company official.
