We've done the Hana RT twice. Traditional north and then back south. Both times we spent one-two nights in Hana. The Hana-Maui Resort is "heaven" btw if you can. And then you can do the trip in all day light. One time we were in a Jeep the other in a regular sedan/convertable. As others have said -- if you have a fear of driving narrow, high mountainess roads - problematic. I can't drive it -- can't even drive in CO, so had friends at the wheel whom it didn't bother. Other than that the southern route home is "rustic" in spots. Bumby, gravel, narrow, high in spots, etc. But, we did it in a sedan and if you go slow -- not a prob. It takes longer though.

Now the West Maui Moutains -- Beware!! , about 5 years ago - against the advice of all guide books - friends driving our Jeep took off around the West Maui mountains. . . in short - terrifying, foolish, I thought we were going to die! Primative, one lane, gravel, no guard rails, sheer drop offs. I didn't see a thing because I had my eyes closed in terror most of the time. We had to back up once to let a truck pass . . . I just shut my eyes and prepared for the end. Be warned. We made it, but seriously it was a foolish thing to do with our "tourist" driving skills. We we got back to hotel I finally clamed down after several cocktails.
