Check in time is a last resort tiebreaker. Status, booking class, amex reserve, and when the ticket was purchased all come before it.

Once you check in you can't be upgraded except at the gate. If not checked in and v opens up anytime before the airport gains control of the flight (3 hours before departure) you can score the upgrade.
