I was in London last week, and was ticketed to return to EWR Saturday, but wanted to change to a Friday night flight instead. Was told on the phone that the only Friday evening flights are to JFK, which would be a different city, so I wasn't allowed to change. So I went to the AA check in desk at Paddington station, and they changed it without a problem.

It all depends who you talk to.
