I would potentially consider something like Louis Vuitton Epi because it's a lot more sturdy than the usual leather, but even that can easily be damaged if dropped onto rough surface or if someone closes the overhead locker with its handle caught.

Leather also tends to be heavier than fabric, which would be a disadvantage. On the other hand, I have to give it credit that it tends to be pliable and more comfortable to carry.

You'll also miss the wheels! I have a few fabric/leather hybrid cabin bags and every time I use them, I miss the wheels and promptly go back to my 4-wheel cabin bag.
I think that the biggest issue for me is weight. It really seems heavy to me.
