I stayed at Le Meridien last year (outside the medina) and was glad I did so. After a long day of walking around the hectic medina and nearly getting hit by motorcycles and being constantly solicited to buy stuff, it was nice to get away. Le Meridien is pretty upscale (nice pool and restaurants) and only a 10 minute walk or really cheap cab ride to the medina. I didn't go with my partner, but I don't suspect there would have been issues.
