Thanks for the replies. My wife and I have discussed this topic and we are going to wait until we arrive in Hawaii before we book. As of today, lava is not flowing into the ocean. Why bother paying $180 per person for a boat ride? Even then it could be a crap shoot. Call HVO on day it states lava making an ocean entry, arrive they next day not entry.

Do they guarentee lava sightings? To an extent. If you read one companies site, they will give you 5% off your trip ($9.00) or a free t-shirt if you do not view lava. Repeat, if you do not view lava. It does not say, if you do not view lava entering the ocean. Heck, the lava could be pooling up on a ridge and that would count. Buyer beware.

As for the safety issue, it sounds more like a comfort issue. I feel safe in a helicopter or a boat. Getting there is part of the thrill. It also could be that everyone said it was unsafe because they were expecting a leisurelyc cruise out to the viewing area.
