Thank you Tango. As soon as I read JerryFF's post, I started to think of an MCO. But given the choice, one should not accept an MCO in place of a residual voucher. The differences between the two are

The MCO is not tax exempt
The MCO is good only on AA vs. any oneworld
The MCO cannot be combined with other coupons like "$20 off $150+"
