I was on a Continental flight from LAX-EWR in which a non-rev passenger assigned to seat 11E moved to 26B because the person in 26B wanted to sit next to his companion in 11D. If I were the 11E passenger, I would have refused to switch unless it was a parent and small child (in this case, it wasn't). I would only switch like-for-like or better. That means I wouldn't switch more than 5 rows behind.
