To add insult to injury, the seats that are on offer to those paying to select seats does not include the "preferred seats". They are held back in case a passenger with status wants to select those seats at some stage.
I can't think of another business where a customer, standing with cash in hand, is not allowed to buy something, just in case a more regular customer might want to buy it at some time in the future!
