I believe the voluntary downgrade means that you 'paid' for a first class ticket, but are agreeing to sit in business until a first class seat opens up.

My understanding is that you would have priority over any other type of upgrades. You are basically treated as a paid F passenger on irrops.

This is not based on AA experience, but on some material I read in another airline's forum, so hopefully someone can confirm this info for your case.
