I think the OP wants to avoid cell phone costs while abroad. Calling his cell phone number will incur international roaming costs if he answers or if he accesses his voice mail while abroad.
I'm trying to get friends/family to call my goggle voice number so I can get their messages via email. Then I can return the call on skype. (assuming I get technologically unchallenged to get it on my iPhone.)
