1) Is your iPhone number a number in the States? If so, it doesn't matter where in the world you are, people will still call that number as a "local US phone number." You may pay hefty international roaming charges to receive the call, but they won't.

2) I second the recommendation for Skype. Get Skype Out (just a dollar or so a month) and you can make all the calls you want back to the US. Be sure to register a US phone number when you get Skype Out and your calls back to the US will be free.
