IMO, jet lag is always worst flying US to EU. I usually don't sleep the night before departure. That way, I'm so tired on the early evening TATL flight that I fall asleep the instant I sit down--and stay asleep for the majority of the flight. With this method, I can adjust to the EU timezone within a day or two without much difficulty.
