"She renewed her green card" sounds, to me at least, like (a) she was, at the time that Denny came to her house, in possession of a green card and (b) the authorities had issued her a green card. How does that make her illegal, and how does that indicate that the authorities were ignoring her??
From what I've read, she was out of status because she did not renew her green card before it expired. Again, I hold no sympathy for those who have the opportunity, but do not follow the rules. So she had a fight with her husband? Tough ...., either deal with it or get out of the country. She obviously used him as a pass to get in. Try getting some sympathy for her from people in Mexico, Guatemala or Honduras. These people give up everything just for a chance to make it in America. All this woman had to do was file a form. I don't advocate vigilante justice, nor do I support a fake Fed trying to enforce laws, but the situation is what it is. Someone who was given the golden ticket and threw it away has no business being in the U.S. Just my humble opinion, though.
