Devil's Advocate here, but she is an absolute moron for not renewing her green card. I'm sorry, but if you knew what some people go through just to get to the U.S., you'd have absolutely no sympathy for her. Every year the desert is littered with the dead bodies of those trying for the American Dream and she pissed it away. I'm not saying she deserved what happened to her, but I won't say she didn't.

Actually, I know what I had to go through to get to Australia, so I agree that to get a green card and then throw it away seems irresponsible. OTOH, she had a fight with her husband (an argument over chicken vs steak, or ongoing domestic violence? We don't know.) and decided to leave the US. (A spur-of-the-moment act of anger, or a decision to leave a really bad marriage? We don't know.) It may have been a foolish decision that she instantly regretted, or it may have been a wise decision that she was later talked out of. We don't know. She may have deserved to be deported legally by the proper authorities. She may have deserved to wait extra years for naturalization. She may have deserved to be out-of-work for not having the right papers. But no one, no matter how foolish, "deserves" the sort of vigilante justice this thug dished out.
As I said above, someone may "deserve" to be jailed, but they don't deserve to be imprisoned by some random stranger without the protection of the courts and due process.
