At OGG the seat was clean and in plastic last October. Like most parents, I can install a car seat in a safe and secure fashion in less than 60 seconds. In fact I prefer to install myself, I don't trust anyone else in this regard.
In HNL I had to grab one from the office, but still no big deal. Again the seat was in plastic and was clean.
FWIW, we have two kids, 4 and 1. The 4 year old sits in the airplane seat (and uses the rental seat from Hertz), and the 1 year old gets his own car seat on the plane (I'm not a lap child fan). I have to carry enough as it is when flying with the family, my back would break if I had to add a second car seat to the pile.
Good news to hear that they seem to be taking care of the seats better these days.
