I would put it in the hold, or as another option, ship it ahead of yourself to your destination rather than checking it. Rather than tripods, a more apt comparison would be a monopod, which I have experience with. Security doesn't like the idea of a meter long metal stick in the cabin, a would most likely confiscate it or send you back to check it. My monopod always gets checked (even though I once saw them for sale at the airside Dixon's in T5B.)
