If possible I'd avoid connecting in Toronto. Even though you don't have checked luggage the lines at customs could be large because Toronto is such a big airport.

how about something like RDU-EWR-YYT. This way you clear customs when you land in St. John's, and it won't be as long as going RDU-YYZ-YYT.
