My brother will be going on a trip on China Eastern's MD-11 to Shanghai later this Spring, we had a discusion about the plane, I thought it is the same as the DC-10, just another name, kind of like 717s and MD-90, but he insisted that they are in fact two differenct models.

I looked at the planes themselves thru Boeing.com and i couldn't tell the difference between the two.

Also, I thought both MD-11 and Dc-10 are discontinued, but he said only the DC-10s are discontinued.

Who is right?
