I flew Cathay Pacific in F a few days ago AKL-HKG. There were 4 of us in first class. When the FA took my meal order she had a note of how many of each item they had - it was 4 of everything except for a couple of the optional snacks. That's how it should be done. I accept with a fuller cabin that may not be possible but there should be enough surplus stock not to run out of 2 options in a cabin of 7.
That sums up my thoughts as well. I would have been philosophical that my first choice was unavailable (although I do think that in F a full choice should be available to all passengers), but then for my second choice to be unavailable as well felt like an unacceptable lapse in service.

The purser told me that 2 fish and 3 chicken meals had been loaded (though, perversely, 14 prawn starters for a cabin of 7!) - I had the impression that I wasn't the only passenger who had been thwarted in their meal choice.
