There is only one party to blame in this scenario - and that is populist, backward Australian governments that refuse to allow Sydney Airport to run 24 hours at full capacity. This prevents airlines from scheduling flights how they best deem appropriate. SQ cannot operate an overnight flight. CX in Winter has to inflate its flight time or arrive into HKG at a ridiculous time. TG is facing the same dilemma. If SYD was allowed to operate 24 hours, airlines such as TG wouldn't have to resort to horrible options of either arriving into BKK at 3am, or stopping in BNE - what a choice!
SYD is also smack bang in the middle (kind of) of the city... Tough gig trying to land/despatch aircraft at all hours...
