True. That's my strategy also. But I believe that exit-row seats are now available for purchase by non-elites as "Choice Seats" within 24 hours of a flight. I'd bet that some not-so-savvy flyers are grabbing 10E as a result.
Although, if I were non-preferred, I'm not sure that I would pay the 5 or 10 bucks to get a middle seat in row 10, there are probably lots available free of charge within 24 hrs of departure
