If you're like most who abuse luggage and then replace, a leather bag may just not be practical for you. Only you know yourself and how you'd care for it.
That's my take...I fly 100k+ miles a year over 35 trips or so. I tend to abuse it rather than have the time to take care of the leather, etc.
I've found ballistic nylon to be a very durable material that can handle the duress of a frequent flyer.
