First, can understand your frustration with the online booking engine, it is far from perfect.

But a slight correction on exit rows, you say "like no other airline" - Qantas charge $80 AUD (~$70USD) for LHR-SIN for exit rows, and Cathay charge $100USD for the shorter LHR-HKG flight for exit rows, so in comparison to two of its "peers", SQ seems quite reasonable if $50 USD is all they charge. As for families - I am sorry unless they are families with elder children, they should not be seated in exit rows, due to the requirement of being able to assist in an emergency (bulkhead rows - yes - but I don't think SQ charges for these).
