Do they have the right to detain me in this manner?

I occassionally just walk out with my purchases, and sometimes they shout after me, but I've never been physically stopped. Could they legally do so?
They have run after me into the parking lot at which point I tell the guy that if there were no line up I would not mind; to which he answers that I should talk to his manager and I follow by saying no thanks you do that.

But never physically stopped. They definitely cannot legally do so. Would be assault. At best they might have the right under commercial law to cancel your membership?

Could be different if you would have stolen something of course.

BTW I wish more people who refuse to behave as sheep and put up with this outrageous line. Although at my local store it has improved in recent months.
